I’d say without knowing exactly what needs to be fixed, you’re looking at an average price of about $15,000. It is quite a bit of money, but given that new upright pianos can cost several tens of thousands of dollars, it may be worth it for your needs.

Let me start by saying that if you’re new to the piano, I’d highly recommend having a professional tune your piano. It’s an incredibly delicate instrument despite its size, and you need a professional who knows exactly what to listen for.

If you’d like to try you hand at it, though, I’d recommend trying first on an older piano that doesn’t hold any sentimental value, just to give you a safe practice space.

How do I know when my piano needs to be restored?

The answer varies depending on who you ask, but in my opinion, when it becomes uncomfortable or impossible to play. I myself have a Winter piano that desperately needs to be tuned and could do with a shine-up, but it’s in perfectly good working condition, so I’m not going to spend tens of thousands of dollars to have it restored.

However, if you have keys missing or broken framework, it may be something to look into.
